You
are engaged the moment you decide to marry. The first people you should
notify is your parents and you should do it in person. Close relatives
and friends can be informed by note or phone. You might consider an engagement
party as an ideal way of telling relatives and friends of the happy news.
Once your relatives and friends are notified, you might consider a formal
announcement of your engagement in your local newspaper and in both sets
of parents' hometown newspapers.
Here
in Detroit it is a little more difficult to run an engagement announcement
in the paper. At this time, The Detroit News is not running any wedding
announcements.
However,
you can still announce your upcoming wedding in the Observer and the Oakland
Press. The Observer has regional editions in 15 Metro Detroit areas and
can place your announcement in the location you designate.
Enclose
a photo is you'd like with your names and address on the back with a stamped,
self-addressed envelope and they will return your photo.
Most
newspapers request announcement information at least three weeks before
the wedding. The announcement generally appears the day following the ceremony.
Since most newspapers receive more wedding announcements than they can
print, the sooner your is sent, and the more clear and concise the information,
the better your chance of having it published.
Each
paper will use as much of the information as it wishes, and in its own
words. In general, you should provide the following:
